About Me

So … your manuscript is finished — congratulations!

Photo by PuraBajaBut maybe you need a copy editor to catch the stray typo, a missing serial comma, that elusive misspelling?

Or … perhaps you’re looking for someone who can help with the overall flow of your manuscript, the “Big Picture”?

Or … that annual report needs a proofreader, a fresh pair of eyes to check the final copy against the original text and find formatting errors?

Or … you have all the right words for your project — but no graphic designer to turn it into a newsletter or Powerpoint presentation?

Or … if only you could find an illustrator to do diagrams, charts, and maps?

Hi — I’m Wynne Brown, a freelance writer, editor, and graphic designer. I’m a one-stop pre-publication shop, and I’m here to help.

As the author of three books, in addition to many newspaper and magazine articles, I’ve written on topics including science, health, history, trails, environmental issues, horses, travel, the Southwest, books, and more. I’m currently working on a biography of Sara Plummer Lemmon, an 19th-century artist and botanist.

As an editor, I worked for six years as a copy editor at a mid-size daily newspaper. I spent another ten years editing and developing teaching materials for middle school, high school, and undergraduate science instruction. Now I edit memoirs, prescriptive nonfiction, and novels. I’m comfortable editing either in Associated Press style or according to the Chicago Manual of Style.

As an illustrator and a graphic designer, I’ve created scientific illustrations for books, journals, posters, and technical reports, as well as developing brochures, logos, and curricular materials.

I work with both large and small companies, including Hewlett-Packard, Carolina Biological Supply Company, Mayo Clinic, Golden Ink, Scripps Howard, Science Approach, and many others. I also work with individual authors who plan to submit their manuscripts to traditional publishers or who intend to publish their book independently.

Whatever your project, I look forward to hearing from you. And, if your project’s not a good fit for me, I’m happy to assist you in finding the help you need.

  1. Thank you! Thank you! Keep them coming, Wynne. At last, something of real interest in my inbox. Will you be in Portal for your birthday with “the December girls?”

  2. My daughter, Diana Freshwater, sent me this. I’ve been in your shoes, and I wish you the best of luck in finding a publisher. I will buy your book when it comes out.

  3. Just read your account of the hike. SOOOOOO glad you didn’t do it alone and that Laura was there to send you off with an interview. Can’t wait to hear the tale of the trail.

    1. I found your message! buried among 23,000+ spam messages … argh. Thanks for alerting me to it!
      Cheers, Wynne

    2. Thank you for the newsletter. I look forward to the next one. I enjoyed the pictures of Sara’s illustrations. Can’ t wait to read the book.

I just read a book about the life of Sharlot Hall, also very interesting.

      1. Hi Sheila –
Thanks so much for your comment! There’ll be another newsletter within the next month or so — and I hope to have good news about publication sometime SOON. In the meantime, I’d love to know which book you read about Sharlot Hall?

      2. Hello Wynne, I just returned to Kansas City after spending a delightful time with a very dear and long time friend, Pauline Savage in Tucson. She was so kind to send me your information as I traveled through the amazing mountains on route 77 on the way back to Albuquerque and would have loved to have had the information regarding Mt Lemmon and those marvelous ladies. I will be looking forward to your book & am passing your information on to several friends of mine. I also will be looking forward to return to the interesting city of Tucson. Best Regards!

  4. WOW!
Your description was absolutely fantastic. I am waiting for your book with happy anticipation. The cake designer had talent and patience to design Mt. Lemmon, — and being a Lemon cake was just the right touch. You are a very interesting speaker, and your writing is World Class

    1. Thank you, Fred, for the very kind words! Yes, the Mount Lemmon cake really was spectacular!

    1. Thank you, Frank! I too am thrilled that readers will be able to see her exquisite paintings!

  5. I read your newsletter the other day, just before packing my computer off to a visit with the Geek Squad. Otherwise, I would have answered sooner.
I am soooooooo happy that Bison Books is your new home for Sara. You deserve to have a publisher who appreciates the value of Sara’s story. You may not be entirely happy with their “working title,” so I suggest you ask to put her quotation about it’s “death to be idle” somewhere on the cover or in the blurb. It is, in fact, something that helps define this indomitable woman who refused to allow illness and physical ailments limit any aspect of her life.
Woo hoo! I’m so proud of you!!

    1. Sharon, thanks so much! and I’m so grateful to have you as both a colleague and a dear friend! And, yes, it’ll be fascinating to see how the title evolves … 🙂

  6. Hi Wynne—Peg Bowden here. We met on a memorable trip to the Rio Sonora a few years ago. I love your newsletter, and can relate to the throes of finishing a manuscript for publication. My book came out a few months ago, and it is so good to have it out there. As a devotee of Mt. Lemmon, I look forward to learning more about Sara and her passion for the botany and big skies of the mountain.

    1. Hi Peg —
How well I remember both you and that terrific trip! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the newsletter, and I’m looking forward to reading your most recent book … do let’s get together again soon? Well, soon after I meet this book deadline … 🙂
      Wonderful to hear from you!

  7. Hi Wynne,
Congratulations on the award. So glad that the DAR is doing things to move beyond it’s cloudy, even negative history!
Exciting about your manuscript! When will it be published? I turned my manuscript in, in early December. It’s scheduled for publication on the fall list. I can’t get any information about a more specific date and I am still without a title. I wonder if the virus will slow down publication of our books. Stay well!

  8. Wynne, I hope you’re well and happy! I’m back in the Midwest. Toughing it out through the pandemic and wondering about old friends. Best to you!

  9. What a great story. Congratulations on getting the color upgrade on your book, which should add a lot to your presentation. And great news about the Adelia Gates pictures that you recovered. I’m still working away on Adelia. Have had a couple of very useful exchanges with Nora at the Smithsonian. Looking forward to seeing your book next year.
    Take care.

    1. Thanks so much, Doug! Good luck with Adelia, and do let me know if I can provide any more assistance.
      Cheers, Wynne

  10. I’m drafting an autobiography of my six years of military service in the mid to late 1960s. The majority of which will be inclusive of my Airborne, Ranger School, Army flight school, and Vietnam service with accompanying digital photographs. The intended target of this memoir is my grandchildren after I’ve passed. Therefore, I believe my largest need is assistance developing the project as opposed to writing a literary piece.

    1. Hello, Roy –
Thanks so much for reaching out to me! I’ll respond via email.

    1. Pi, thanks so much! And congratulations to YOU on the twins’ graduation — that’s so exciting!

  11. Congratulations, Wynne,
I am so HAPPY for you!!

  12. CONGRATULATIONS! Ordered your book from Antigone…….are you doing a signing there? I would like to have you personalize it for a friend. S.

    1. Thank you, Suzanne! Antigone’s isn’t doing any events until next year — but I’ll be going there to sign books, and then you can pick yours up. Email me at wynne at wynnebrown dot com with the text you’d like in the inscription. We’ll get this figured out! 🙂

    1. Carol, thanks so much! If you’d like signed, I can send you a personally inscribed, pandemically safe bookplate. Just email me at wynne at wynnebrown dot com with your address, and I’ll mail it to you.
